Gum Disease Treatment in Hastings
Specialist Periodontal Care for Healthier Gums & Long-Term Oral Health
Expert care for advanced gum disease, with a personalised treatment plan and long-term support from our in-house periodontist.
Gum disease (periodontitis) is more common than many people realise—and if left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, and increased health risks. At The Dental Institute, we provide specialist periodontal care from diagnosis through to treatment and maintenance, all in one place.
Led by Dr Helen Barker, a registered periodontist with over 20 years of specialist experience, we’re here to help you stabilise your gum health, protect your teeth, and feel confident in your care plan.
Specialist Periodontal Treatments
-
Advanced Gum Disease (Periodontitis)
We treat moderate to severe gum disease with deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), targeted therapies, and ongoing monitoring to reduce inflammation and bone loss.
-
Gum Infections & Bleeding Gums
Persistent bleeding, swelling, or sensitivity are often early signs of gum disease. We provide thorough assessment and early intervention to stop progression.
-
Gum Recession
Where gums have pulled away from the teeth, we assess the cause and recommend treatment to prevent further tissue or bone damage.
-
Treatment for Referred Patients
We regularly work with referring dentists to provide specialist periodontal support, and will keep your regular provider updated throughout the process.
Awesome dentist with a great team. They care about what they do and are very gentle in their approach. Thank you very much.

What to Expect During Periodontal Treatment
Gum treatment doesn’t happen overnight—but with the right plan, we can manage and improve your oral health for the long term. Here's how we approach it:
1
Periodontal Assessment
We begin with a comprehensive gum exam, digital x-rays, and full charting of your gum health. You’ll receive a diagnosis, prognosis, and tailored treatment options.
2
Specialist Cleaning & Stabilisation
We remove deep bacterial build-up below the gum line using ultrasonic instruments, often under local anaesthetic. This allows healing and reduces pocket depth.
3
Maintenance & Monitoring
After initial treatment, we’ll reassess your response and set up a long-term maintenance schedule with your hygienist and dentist to keep gum disease under control.
Common Questions About Gum Disease & Treatment
Here are the answers our specialist team is asked most often.
-
A periodontist is a dental specialist with additional training in diagnosing and treating gum disease and placing dental implants. Dr Helen Barker is one of New Zealand’s leading periodontists.
-
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can’t be reversed, but it can be treated and managed to prevent further damage.
-
Most treatment is done with local anaesthetic and is not painful. We focus on making your experience comfortable and always explain what to expect.
-
It varies based on severity. Initial treatment may take 1–2 appointments, followed by maintenance visits every 3–6 months depending on your needs.
-
No referral is required. You can book directly with us, or ask your dentist to send us a referral—we’re happy to coordinate your care either way.
